Where Can I Buy a Ticket?

You can pre-book your train tickets online on the official Manchester Airport website, or purchase one from the ticket machines located on-site, or at the information desk at the Manchester Airport train station.

 

National Rail Services 

There are currently nine trains per hour to the Manchester Airport train station from the city, including services from Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales. There are services between Manchester Airport and Crew, for connections to the south, and Manchester Piccadilly, for connections to the north. The most frequent services are between Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, followed by regular trains to Leeds, York, Doncaster, Sheffield, Blackpool North, and Scotland. 

 

Manchester Metrolink

The Manchester Metrolink is a light rail network which was extended from St Werburgh's Road to Manchester Airport. The Metrolink station was built adjacent to the Manchester Airport train station, and serves as the terminus of the Airport Line. Trams run between Manchester Airport and Victoria tram stop every 12 minutes. An early morning service runs from 3:19 – 6:00 am every 20 minutes.

 

HS2 Services in Manchester

Although not yet available, plans are in place to build a HS2 station at Manchester Airport, which will improve the airport’s accessibility. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority redevelopment plans around the airport include high speed rail networks which will significantly shorten journey times and help reduce overcrowding. 

HS2 will be integrated into existing rail networks at the airport, as well as Northern Powerhouse Rail. In addition, two new HS2 tracks to Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly will create space for additional train lines to Crewe and Stockport, providing options for more frequent local and regional services.

 

About Manchester Airport Station

Manchester Airport train station is almost 10 miles south of Manchester Piccadilly, at the end of a short branch from the Styal Line. Accessible via a triangular junction located between Heald Green and Styal, and connected to a branch of the Manchester Metrolink, the station is colloquially known  as "The Station" and often signposted as such. The station platforms are connected to the airport terminal buildings and a manned ticket office by escalator, lift, ramps, and a covered walkway known as the “Sky Link”.

If you take advantage of the Sky Link walkway, you can reach your terminal in 5 to 15 minutes. Unless you have heavy luggage or reduced mobility, you should not need to use a transfer service or shuttle bus. 

 

Which Terminal is the Train Station at Manchester Airport?

Manchester Airport Train Station is located between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, however it is within easy walking distance of all three terminals. There are lifts, escalators, and moving walkways which all connect the train station to the terminal buildings. It takes between 5 and 15 minutes to get to and from the terminals, depending on where you’re flying from. In addition, you’ll find signage overhead that will help guide you through to the airport.
